Grocery Stores

Grocery stores deal with food, which puts them in a central position in our food systems. They can donate their surplus food that may be blemished or approaching its sell-by date to a food bank, which helps feed the food insecure. They also can sell food that is less than perfect (often called seconds) for a discounted price. Hiring a composting company to pick up spoiled food often saves the store money compared to the price of sending it to a landfill. Finally the “use by” and expiration dates on food items cause large amounts of food to be thrown away. Most of the regional Kansas City area grocery stores send their food scraps, and culls to Missouri Organic Recycling.

Food Banks

A food bank is a large warehouse and food distribution facility, collecting donated food from farmers, grocers, community and corporate groups, restaurants and individuals and distributing it to agencies in neighborhoods far and wide who are serving food insecure families, seniors and children.
