Making power

Making power from food scraps in a methane digester is like what happens when food goes into the landfill. Both places make methane gas but the digester collects the food and adds some brown material while holding the liquid in a warm tank. Bacteria digest the food waste and emit both carbon dioxide and methane gas.

Digester gas has about one half the concentration of methane that is in natural gas and about half the heating value.

Because digesters are usually made for treating the wastes of  an entire city, they are often big and costly.
